Disco Highway

I created the series Disco Highway as a community installation for the 2024 edition of the (s)Hiver Festival. Each full size highway sign is fully covered in hand placed sequins and include Left Hand Turn, 70 km/h, Traffic Signal Ahead, Photo Area Ahead, Moose in Area, and Thank You, Resume Speed. Since moving to Dawson, I have spent a large amount of time driving the North Klondike Highway back and forth to Whitehorse, for supplies and appointments. Living in a remote community really makes you appreciate the lifeline that our highways create for us. However, it is still a very long drive to get here, from pretty much everywhere, and it can sometimes be a harrowing journey filled with construction, dangerous road conditions and random animals. Creating Disco Highway was a way for me to both celebrate the highway, but also to entertain myself on the drive! As well, the Disco Highway is a metaphor for life in general. Yes, there may be construction ahead, or maybe a surprisingly big pothole, but it's all going to work out in the end and we will all get where we are going eventually! There is a bit of Disco in every life and that's what makes it all worth living, or at least, going on a nice, long drive.
