Sequins, Resin and Collage

Sequined Mountains

In November, 2020, I was awarded the Yukon Government Advanced Artist Award. This award allowed me to create a series of 3D papier mache mountains that I then painted like my large scale landscape paintings and embellished with sequins and glitter. During the process of this project, I discovered a passion for sculpture, a departure from my strictly 2D art practice. Working with a variety of materials, like chicken wire, papier mache, plaster, glue, sequins, glitter and cardboard, I experimented with my vision of Yukon mountains, a key feature in my landscape paintings. This project also opened a floodgate of ideas for my art practice in a variety of media that continues to the present day.

Too Many Cooks in the Kitchen - May 2021

This group exhibition was the brainchild of David Ashley, a metal and jewelry artist in based in Whitehorse, Yukon. It was inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic with the idea being that during that time we had all been cooking at home and eating out was under lock down. David invited me to participate, even though I was not a sculpture artist at the time. I made a fork, spoon and cast iron frying pan made of styrofoam, drywall plaster, glue and sequins. The fork and spoon were inspired by the same utensils displayed in my grandparents' house that were made of wood, decorative hangings that I think were quite popular in the 1970's. The cast iron frying pan was an ode to the family camping trips my husband and I took my children on since they were babies. I added the fried eggs and bacon to represent a favourite camping breakfast.
